EXCLUSIVE: PRISON BIRTH PROJECT
PNG image.png

Written By: Kai Li

In an interview with Ashlyn Johnson and Gabriella Pough–the Co-Directors of Prison Birth Project (PBP)’s Research Committee–I learned about their stories growing into PBP as well as their current interests and initiatives. Their submission to the Undergraduate Journal of Public Health last fall introduced some of the injustices incarcerated mothers face, and they elaborate on some of the topics here. I try to illuminate more about the hidden difficulties of topics such as prison visits and inmate labor while emphasizing why PBP’s work, while niche, is relevant and imperative.

Ashlyn is a junior studying neuroscience and Gabrielle is a senior, also studying neuroscience. They are the Co-Directors of Prison Birth Project’s Research Committee. As directors, they lead committee meetings and decide which member-pitched ideas pique further research. They are currently working on interviewing incarcerated mothers and reaching out to professors for possibly distributing educational materials in Women & Gender Studies classes here at the University of Michigan.
